TINUBU DECLARES STATE POLICE “UNAVOIDABLE” AMID RISING INSECURITY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to establishing state police in Nigeria, describing the move as “unavoidable” in the face of rising insecurity across the country.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa while hosting a delegation from Katsina State led by Governor Dikko Radda, Tinubu emphasized that the federal government is reviewing the nation’s entire security framework. He noted that the challenges posed by banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes demand a decentralized policing system tailored to local needs.

“I am reviewing all aspects of security, and I have to create state police. We are looking at that holistically,” Tinubu declared. He stressed that citizens, places of worship, and public spaces must be fully protected, and pledged that reforms would be pursued with urgency.

As part of immediate measures, the President ordered a comprehensive review of security operations in Katsina and approved the deployment of advanced military equipment, including drones and other surveillance gadgets. He also directed the strengthening of forest guards to help secure rural and remote areas often targeted by criminals. Tinubu further instructed security agencies to provide him with daily operational reports to ensure accountability and effective oversight.

Acknowledging that state policing has long been a politically sensitive subject, the President noted that the worsening insecurity has made bold reforms inevitable. He assured Nigerians that his administration is determined to strike the right balance between federal oversight and state-level autonomy to safeguard lives and property.

The renewed push for state police has been welcomed by many Nigerians who believe it will bring law enforcement closer to the grassroots. However, it also raises questions about funding, training, and ensuring impartiality at the state level.

Tinubu’s declaration signals the beginning of what could be a historic restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture, with the ultimate goal of restoring peace and stability across the nation.
