ICELAND HOLDS MAJOR REFERENDUM ON RESUMING EU MEMBERSHIP TALKS
August 29, 2026 Iceland is holding a closely watched national referendum on whether the country should resume negotiations to join the European Union, reopening a debate that has remained largely dormant for more than a decade. The vote is attracting significant attention because of its potential implications for Iceland's economy, fishing industry, national sovereignty and future security relationships. However, voters are not being asked to decide whether Iceland should immediately become a member of the European Union.
