The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has addressed growing concerns surrounding insecurity and allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria.
Speaking during recent public engagements and statements linked to the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the Sultan rejected claims that Northern Nigeria is carrying out an organized genocide against Christians. He described such narratives as dangerous and capable of creating further division among Nigerians.
According to the Sultan, insecurity in Nigeria affects people from different religious backgrounds. He explained that both Muslims and Christians have suffered greatly from terrorism, insurgency, and violent attacks across several regions of the country.
He stated that extremist groups such as Boko Haram have attacked many communities without focusing on one religion alone. The Sultan added that thousands of Muslims living in Northern Nigeria have also lost their lives and properties to terrorism and banditry.
The respected traditional ruler also warned against spreading false or unverified information on social media. He urged Nigerians to confirm reports before sharing them online, stressing that misinformation can increase religious tension and weaken national unity.
His comments come as insecurity continues to affect several states, including Borno, Plateau, Benue, and other parts of Nigeria facing attacks linked to insurgency, banditry, and communal violence.
While some organizations continue to raise concerns about attacks on Christian communities, security analysts and religious leaders argue that the crisis is largely driven by terrorism, criminal activities, poverty, and political instability rather than a coordinated religious extermination campaign.
The Sultan praised Nigerian security agencies for their continued efforts against terrorism and insecurity. He also called for stronger cooperation between religious leaders, traditional institutions, and government authorities to restore peace and stability across the country.
As discussions continue over Nigeria’s security challenges, many citizens are calling for practical solutions that focus on protecting lives, promoting peace, and strengthening national unity.
