Powerful Earthquake Strikes Peru, Leaving Communities in Mourning

A powerful magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck central Peru on Sunday, July 19, 2026, leaving several people dead, dozens injured, and causing widespread damage across affected communities. The earthquake occurred in the Junín Region, with tremors also felt in nearby cities and surrounding provinces, sending residents rushing out of homes, schools, offices, and businesses in fear.

According to Peru's National Emergency Operations Center, the earthquake struck during the daytime, catching many people by surprise. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the affected areas to search for survivors, rescue trapped victims, and provide urgent medical care. Hospitals and health centers received numerous injured residents, while emergency workers continued assessing the extent of the destruction.

The quake damaged homes, commercial buildings, schools, and public infrastructure. Several walls collapsed, roads developed large cracks, and falling debris blocked major streets, making access difficult for rescue personnel. Temporary power outages and communication disruptions were also reported in some communities, slowing emergency operations during the first few hours after the disaster.

Firefighters, police officers, military personnel, and volunteers have been working around the clock to assist victims and search damaged structures for anyone still trapped. Local authorities established emergency shelters for families whose homes were destroyed or declared unsafe. Humanitarian organizations also began distributing food, clean drinking water, blankets, medical supplies, and other essential relief materials to displaced residents.

Peru is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic belts, where the Nazca Plate continuously moves beneath the South American Plate. This geological activity makes the country highly vulnerable to frequent earthquakes, ranging from minor tremors to powerful seismic events capable of causing significant destruction.

Seismologists have warned that aftershocks are likely to continue over the coming days. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, avoid entering damaged buildings until they have been declared safe, and closely follow official emergency instructions. Citizens have also been encouraged to keep emergency kits containing drinking water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, medications, and important documents.

Government officials expressed their condolences to the families who lost loved ones and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting rescue, relief, and recovery operations. Engineers have already begun inspecting bridges, hospitals, schools, and other public facilities to determine the level of structural damage before reopening them to the public.

Today's earthquake serves as another reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness in earthquake-prone regions. As rescue operations continue across Junín and neighboring areas, communities throughout Peru are coming together to support those affected. Authorities remain hopeful that ongoing rescue efforts and coordinated humanitarian assistance will help families recover and begin rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.

COUNTRIES THAT WERE ONCE PREDOMINANTLY CHRISTIAN BUT ARE NOW MUSLIM-MAJORITY

INTRODUCTION Across the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Europe and Central Asia, Christianity once flourished centuries before Islam emerged in the 7th century. Many regions that are today Muslim-majority were originally dominated by Christian populations, churches, monasteries, and theological centers that shaped early Christian doctrine. Over time, political change, military conquest, economic systems, social pressure, migration, and historical conflicts transformed the religious demographics of these regions. This article examines countries and regions that were once largely Christian but are now predominantly Muslim, using historical evidence and demographic estimates. EGYPT Egypt was one of the earliest and most influential centers of Christianity. The Church of Alexandria played a foundational role in Christian theology, and monasticism originated in the Egyptian desert. Before the Arab-Muslim conquest in 640 CE, Egypt was overwhelmingly Christian, with the ma...

TRUMP DEPLOYS NATIONAL GUARD TO CHICAGO AMID RISING UNREST

TRUMP DEPLOYS NATIONAL GUARD TO CHICAGO AMID RISING UNREST In a move that has sparked widespread debate across the United States, President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago. The decision, according to the White House, comes in response to a series of violent protests, vandalism, and reported lawlessness that have gripped parts of the city in recent weeks. Administration officials say the deployment is aimed at restoring peace and protecting federal buildings, businesses, and citizens, but critics argue it marks another instance of federal overreach and political showmanship. The announcement was made late Saturday following a high-level security briefing at the White House. In his statement, Trump emphasized that the federal government “would not sit idly by while chaos and violence undermine public safety.” The president pointed to reports of shootings, looting, and clashes between demonstrators and police as justification ...
