ENUGU POLICE RESCUE 211 KIDNAP VICTIMS

The Enugu State Police Command says it rescued 211 kidnapped victims and detained 6,240 suspects during 17 months of security operations across the state.

The figures were disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, during a working visit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, Miller Dantawaye. According to the command, the period under review covers operations carried out since Giwa assumed office on March 11, 2025.

SECURITY OPERATIONS

The police said the operations targeted kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, cultism, illegal possession of firearms and other offences.

Among those detained were 158 suspected kidnappers, 186 suspected armed robbers, 188 murder suspects, 57 suspects linked to rape and defilement, 273 suspects connected with alleged cult activities and 63 suspects accused of unlawful firearm possession.

The command said another 5,315 suspects were detained over various offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.

WEAPONS RECOVERED

The security operations also resulted in the recovery of 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition.

According to the police, the recovered weapons included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, alongside other firearms. Officers also recovered 209 vehicles and other vehicular exhibits, including tricycles and motorcycles.

The figures highlight the scale of the security challenges facing the state and the efforts being made by law enforcement agencies to disrupt criminal networks.

POLICE STRATEGY

Commissioner Giwa attributed the reported results to intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and cooperation with neighbouring states.

He also pointed to the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, stronger border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police's Handshake Patrol initiative and improved emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre.

However, the commissioner called for additional support, particularly in manpower, operational equipment and personnel welfare, to help the command sustain its security operations.

FOCUS ON SECURITY

During his visit, AIG Dantawaye urged police personnel to maintain professionalism, discipline and accountability while respecting citizens' rights.

He also encouraged officers to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and work towards strengthening public confidence in the police.

The latest figures provide an indication of the scale of policing activity in Enugu over the 17-month period. At the same time, the continued need for resources and personnel shows that security remains an important challenge for the state.

The Enugu Police Command is expected to continue its operations against kidnapping and other violent crimes while working with other security agencies and neighbouring states to improve public safety.
