Russian Strikes Intensify in Ukraine as Putin Warns Europe Over Troop Deployment

Russia has intensified its aerial attacks across Ukraine, while President Vladimir Putin has warned European countries that deploying troops to Ukraine would amount to direct conflict with Russia. The latest developments have increased concerns about a wider escalation of the war and added new pressure to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russian missile and drone strikes on Saturday killed civilians and injured dozens of people across several regions. The attacks affected cities and communities including Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Kramatorsk and areas of the Zhytomyr region. Residential buildings, industrial facilities and other infrastructure were damaged.

Civilian Areas Hit by New Attacks

Odesa was among the areas affected by the latest strikes. Regional officials reported dozens of injuries following an overnight attack, including damage to a residential high-rise. Other strikes caused deaths and injuries in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih.

In the Zhytomyr region, officials reported that a strike on a grocery store killed two people. Kramatorsk also suffered casualties after drones struck vehicles in the city.

The attacks demonstrate the continued danger faced by Ukrainian civilians as Russia maintains a sustained air campaign. Ukrainian officials say Russia has increasingly focused on energy infrastructure and other critical facilities as winter approaches.

Russia and Ukraine Exchange Long-Range Attacks

The latest escalation has not been limited to Russian attacks inside Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have also continued conducting long-range strikes against targets inside Russia.

Ukraine said it attacked industrial facilities in Russia, including a synthetic rubber plant in the Samara region. Russian authorities confirmed drone attacks in parts of the country and reported damage to residential and industrial properties.

Both sides have increasingly targeted infrastructure, industrial facilities, logistics networks and other assets that support their respective war efforts. However, claims made by either side about individual military targets cannot always be independently verified.

The military escalation comes as Putin issued a strong warning regarding discussions about the possible deployment of European troops to Ukraine.

Speaking during the BRICS summit in India, Putin said that sending European military personnel into Ukraine would mean direct conflict with Russia. His remarks reflect Moscow's continued opposition to any Western military presence in Ukraine.

European governments have discussed security arrangements and possible guarantees for Ukraine as part of longer-term efforts to support the country. Any decision to deploy troops, however, would represent a major development because of the potential consequences for relations between Russia and European countries.

Ukraine Faces Growing Economic Pressure

Beyond the immediate human cost, the intensified attacks are placing additional pressure on Ukraine's economy.

Ukrainian officials estimate that Russian air attacks have caused billions of dollars in infrastructure damage during 2026. Damage to ports and disruptions to major industries are also threatening important sources of export revenue.

The approaching winter has created additional concerns because attacks on energy infrastructure could affect electricity, heating and other essential services. Ukrainian authorities are therefore preparing for difficult economic and humanitarian conditions in the months ahead.

Diplomatic Efforts Remain Under Pressure

Despite the continuing military confrontation, diplomatic discussions remain an important part of the international response. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated a willingness to meet Putin at an upcoming G20 summit, although Russia has not confirmed whether Putin will attend.

For now, the latest attacks and warnings underline how difficult it remains to achieve a lasting settlement. Increased military activity, concerns over European involvement and continuing attacks on infrastructure could further complicate efforts to reach an agreement.

The situation remains closely watched by European governments and other international partners because any significant expansion of the conflict could have consequences far beyond Ukraine's borders.

As Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging attacks, the immediate priority remains protecting civilians, maintaining essential infrastructure and preventing the conflict from developing into a broader confrontation between Russia and European countries.
