AKACHAAM ARRESTED IN NNEWI
Sir James Louis Okoye, popularly known as Akachaam, has reportedly been arrested by local vigilante operatives in Nnewi, Anambra State, after he was seen carrying out what he described as a cleansing exercise on the streets of the town.
Okoye, a former member of the Knights of St John International, attracted renewed public attention after appearing in Nnewi wearing red clothing, carrying fresh palm fronds and holding a bell. According to reports, his unusual public activity attracted the attention of residents, who alerted local security operatives.
THE ARREST
Reports indicate that Okoye was questioned by vigilante operatives after he was intercepted during the exercise.
A video circulating in connection with the incident shows him being questioned while explaining the reason for his activities. He reportedly maintained that he was performing a cleansing exercise because he believed that Nnewi had been affected by evil or negative spiritual forces.
Okoye also reportedly claimed that he had obtained permission from the traditional ruler of Nnewi before beginning the exercise. However, this claim has not been independently established in the reports available.
It was not immediately clear where Okoye was being held, whether he had been released, or whether any formal criminal charge had been filed against him.
WHY AKACHAAM IS KNOWN
Okoye became widely known in Nnewi earlier this year following controversy surrounding the dedication of the Assumpta Cathedral.
During the event, he reportedly publicly renounced Christianity and criticised the Catholic Church over what he described as its failure to recognise the contribution of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to the construction of the cathedral.
The Catholic Church subsequently rejected the claims, while Okoye's actions attracted considerable attention online and within Nnewi.
MIXED REACTIONS
The latest incident has generated different reactions, with videos of the arrest and questioning circulating online.
Some people have expressed concern about the nature of the public activity, while others have focused on Okoye's explanation that he was carrying out the exercise for the benefit of Nnewi.
At this stage, claims circulating on social media about his mental or physical condition should not be treated as established facts because there has been no confirmed medical assessment publicly establishing such claims.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The circumstances surrounding the reported arrest remain subject to further clarification.
Any formal charges, police involvement, release, or official statement from relevant authorities would provide a clearer picture of what happens next.
For now, the arrest of Akachaam has once again placed his activities and his earlier dispute with the Catholic Church at the centre of public discussion in Nnewi.
