PETER OBI’S BENUE VISIT SPARKS CONTROVERSY

Peter Obi’s recent visit to Benue State has generated political controversy following an incident involving his convoy and a group of youths during his planned visit to Yelewata, a community affected by deadly attacks.

Obi, the former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, said he travelled to the state to sympathise with victims and families affected by the violence. He maintained that the visit was humanitarian and not intended as a political campaign.

However, the visit reportedly took an unexpected turn when Obi’s convoy was stopped while travelling towards the affected community. Obi expressed disappointment over the incident and questioned why he would be prevented from visiting people affected by tragedy.

The development quickly attracted attention because of allegations concerning the possible involvement of political actors. Obi reportedly suggested that individuals connected to the state government could have played a role in the incident.

The Benue State Government, however, rejected the allegation.

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration said it was not aware of Obi’s visit and denied sponsoring anyone to obstruct his movement. Government officials also questioned the failure to properly coordinate the visit with the relevant authorities, particularly because of Obi’s status as a former governor and prominent political figure.

The disagreement has produced conflicting accounts about whether adequate notification was given to security authorities before the visit.

The police, meanwhile, acknowledged awareness of Obi’s movement and said security personnel were deployed. The circumstances surrounding the youths’ action and why the convoy was stopped have reportedly become subjects of investigation.

Reactions from Nigerians and political observers have been mixed. Obi’s supporters have described the incident as unacceptable and argued that every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, should be free to visit communities affected by violence and express sympathy with victims.

Others have urged caution, arguing that political figures must follow appropriate security procedures when visiting sensitive locations, particularly communities that have experienced serious violence.

The incident has also revived broader discussions about political tolerance in Nigeria. With the 2027 general elections approaching, disagreements involving major political personalities are likely to attract increased public attention.

For many observers, the most important question is now whether the circumstances surrounding the disruption of Obi’s visit will be fully established and whether those responsible will be identified.

Beyond the political accusations and counter-accusations, Benue continues to face serious security and humanitarian challenges. The latest controversy therefore comes at a sensitive time, when attention should remain focused on protecting affected communities, supporting victims and restoring lasting peace.
