KIMI ANTONELLI MAKES FORMULA 1 HISTORY AS YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION
Italian racing sensation Kimi Antonelli has achieved a moment in motorsport, becoming the youngest driver ever to win the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship. The 20-year-old Mercedes star secured the 2026 title at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1, after finishing third in a dramatic race won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Antonelli entered the 71-lap contest knowing that a ninth-place finish would be enough to guarantee the championship. Starting fourth on the grid, he delivered a composed and disciplined drive, avoided the incidents and crossed the finish line in third place. He secured an unassailable lead with four rounds remaining.
The achievement places Antonelli ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who previously held the record after winning his first world title at 23 years and 134 days in 2010. Antonelli claimed the crown at 20 years and 68 days, rewriting a record that had stood for 16 years. He is also the first Italian driver to become Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
A REMARKABLE RISE THROUGH THE RANKS
Antonelli’s championship is the result of years of preparation, discipline and development. After building his reputation in karting and junior single-seater competitions, he joined Mercedes’ Formula 1 programme and made his debut in 2025. Expectations were high, but few could have predicted that he would capture the drivers’ title in only his second season.
His 2026 campaign gathered momentum early. Strong performances, race victories and consistent points finishes established him as a contender. He took the championship lead after the Japanese Grand Prix and continued to build an advantage all season. By the time the series reached Mexico City, his position was strong enough that he needed only a top-nine finish to settle the contest.
DRAMA IN MEXICO CITY
The race was dramatic. Verstappen claimed victory, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finishing second. A heavy crash involving Valtteri Bottas brought out a red flag and interrupted the race, while a later safety-car period followed another incident. Despite the disruption, Antonelli maintained his focus and brought his Mercedes home safely.
The result was emotional. Antonelli was visibly moved as he crossed the line, reflecting on the journey from karting to the pinnacle of motorsport. His achievement strengthens Mercedes’ position in the constructors’ championship. It is a breakthrough for Italian motorsport and the Mercedes team.
WHAT THE VICTORY MEANS FOR FORMULA 1
Antonelli’s success signals a generational change in Formula 1. It demonstrates how young drivers, supported by strong teams, preparation and technical development, can compete at the highest level. His title will inspire aspiring racers, particularly in Italy, where fans have waited decades for another home-grown world champion.
The season is not over, and the remaining races will shape the final standings and constructors’ battle. However, the drivers’ championship has been decided. Antonelli has transformed promise into achievement, delivered under pressure and secured his place in Formula 1 history. At just 20, he has reached the sport’s highest honour—and his career may only be beginning.
