37 Detainees Die in Custody
Nigeria is investigating the deaths of 37 people who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State, following arrests connected to suspected illegal gold mining. The detainees were arrested during enforcement operations carried out on September 15 and 16 in the Wushishi-Lukoto area, west of Minna. The operation was part of efforts by authorities to tackle unauthorised mining activities in the state. The deaths were reported after the suspects were taken into custody. Authorities initially suggested that a possible disease outbreak could have been responsible. However, the NSCDC later stated that the actual cause of death had not yet been established and would have to be determined through medical examinations and autopsies.
