 JAPAN'S STRATEGIC ENGAGEMENT IN SUPER GARUDA SHIELD 2025

Japan has escalated its defense diplomacy by fully participating in the Super Garuda Shield 2025, a multinational military exercise hosted by Indonesia.  This marks the first time Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF) have engaged in all three branches—Ground, Air, and Maritime—of the annual drills.  

The exercise, which commenced on August 25, 2025, in Jakarta, involves approximately 6,500 personnel from 17 countries, including the United States, Australia, Singapore, and the Netherlands.  Over 750 Japanese SDF members are participating in various training activities, such as airborne operations, combat firing, and island recapture drills across Indonesia.  
Japan's increased involvement underscores its commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, aligning with its broader defense strategy to enhance interoperability with allied forces and promote regional stability.  The expanded participation also reflects Japan's evolving defense posture and its proactive role in multilateral security initiatives.  

The Super Garuda Shield 2025 is set to conclude on September 4, 2025, with participating nations aiming to bolster their collective defense capabilities and foster stronger military partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
