DEADLY OUTBREAK LEAVES COMMUNITIES IN SHOCK

At least 48 people have died in Ondo State following the consumption of a locally produced alcoholic drink suspected to have been contaminated with methanol. Health authorities said the incident has affected 182 people, with approximately 100 others receiving medical treatment.

The affected communities are located in the Odigbo and Irele Local Government Areas of the state, where authorities are working to establish the exact source of the suspected contamination and prevent further deaths.

SEVERE HEALTH EFFECTS REPORTED

According to Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Banji Ajaka, the suspected poisoning can cause serious and rapidly developing health complications. Reported effects include loss of vision, kidney failure and damage to the brain.

Some victims have reportedly been discharged after receiving treatment, while others remain in hospitals as medical teams continue to respond to the emergency.

Methanol is a toxic form of alcohol that can cause severe poisoning when consumed. Even relatively small amounts can result in serious illness, permanent blindness or death.

POLICE ARREST 15 PEOPLE

Authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Ondo State Police said 15 people had been arrested in connection with the suspected poisoning.

Among those arrested is an individual allegedly involved in producing a drink suspected of containing methanol. Police said the person is assisting investigators as authorities attempt to determine how the contaminated product was produced and distributed.

The investigation is expected to focus on the source of the drink, the production process and the distribution network.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATE SUSPECTED CONTAMINATION

Health officials and law-enforcement agencies are working to determine exactly what caused the outbreak. Local reports have linked the incident to a popular locally produced alcoholic herbal mixture, although authorities are still investigating the precise source of the suspected methanol contamination.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control is also involved in efforts to address unsafe alcoholic products and strengthen enforcement against prohibited forms of alcohol distribution.

PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers associated with unregulated or improperly produced alcoholic beverages. Locally produced drinks remain popular in many communities because they are often cheaper and more accessible than commercially manufactured alternatives.

However, contamination during production can create serious health risks, particularly when toxic substances are introduced into beverages intended for human consumption.

Authorities are urging members of the public to exercise caution and avoid consuming suspicious or unverified alcoholic products.
