MEDICAL PLANE MISSING OFF NANTUCKET

A search and rescue operation is underway off the coast of Massachusetts after a medical transport aircraft carrying six people disappeared during a flight from Bermuda to Boston.

The aircraft, a Canadian-registered Gulfstream G100 operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, departed L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda early Saturday and was scheduled to arrive at Boston Logan International Airport. However, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers while flying over the Atlantic Ocean near Nantucket.

Four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals were reportedly aboard the aircraft. The Canadians included two pilots and two medical personnel, while the Bermudian passengers were a patient and a companion accompanying the patient.

CONTACT LOST DURING FLIGHT

Authorities said the aircraft encountered problems during the flight before communication was lost. Preliminary information indicates that the crew reported electrical difficulties while the plane was travelling at about 24,000 feet.

The aircraft subsequently experienced a rapid descent before disappearing from radar and losing communication with authorities.

The circumstances surrounding the descent remain under investigation. Officials have not yet determined whether the reported electrical problems directly caused the aircraft to disappear.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft's communications, flight data, weather conditions, mechanical systems and other available evidence as the search continues.

DEBRIS FOUND AT SEA

The U.S. Coast Guard later located debris believed to be connected to the missing aircraft in waters off Nantucket.

The discovery gave search teams an important area to investigate, but authorities had not confirmed that any of the six people aboard had been found as of Sunday.

Search teams have been using aircraft, boats, helicopters and other resources to cover a large area of ocean. The operation involves searching both the surface and underwater areas around the location where debris was discovered.

The difficult conditions of an offshore search can make it challenging for rescuers to locate people or wreckage, particularly when an aircraft disappears over open water.

FAMILIES AWAIT ANSWERS

The disappearance has prompted concern in the United States, Canada and Bermuda because nationals from all three countries are connected to the flight.

Authorities are maintaining communication with the families of those aboard as search operations continue. Officials have urged people to rely on confirmed information while investigators work to establish what happened.

Medical transport aircraft play an important role in transferring patients from locations where specialised medical services may not be available to larger medical centres. The incident has therefore attracted particular attention in Bermuda, where air ambulance services can provide an important connection to healthcare facilities abroad.

SEARCH CONTINUES

The discovery of debris represents a significant development, but the search remains focused on finding the six people who were aboard the aircraft and determining exactly what happened during the flight.

Authorities have not yet announced a confirmed cause of the incident. Investigators will need to recover and examine additional evidence before reaching conclusions.

As search crews continue working off the Massachusetts coast, families and officials in the United States, Canada and Bermuda are awaiting further information about the missing aircraft and its occupants.

The situation remains under investigation, with authorities expected to provide additional updates as new evidence becomes available.
