Wike, Soludo and Adeleke’s APC Appointments Spark Backlash
The appointment of Nyesom Wike, Chukwuma Charles Soludo and Ademola Adeleke as coordinators of President Bola Tinubu's 2027 presidential campaign has sparked controversy, with questions emerging over political loyalty, party identity and the interests the arrangement is expected to serve.
Unlike a conventional campaign structure built around members of the ruling party, the revised council includes prominent politicians associated with other political parties. This has prompted debate about whether the arrangement represents political cooperation or creates confusion about the distinction between opposition parties and the ruling APC.
Soludo's Appointment Draws Particular Attention
In Anambra State, Soludo's inclusion has become a major talking point because he remains a governor elected under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), not the APC.
Critics of the arrangement question why an APGA governor should coordinate a campaign for an APC presidential candidate. Some are concerned about what the decision means for the identity of APGA, particularly among supporters who expect the party to maintain a distinct political position.
Others question whether the interests of Anambra residents will be adequately separated from the political objectives of a presidential re-election campaign.
The controversy also reflects wider political disagreements in the South-East over support for Tinubu's re-election. For some critics, the issue is not simply whether Soludo can cooperate with the Federal Government, but whether such cooperation should extend to leading the president's campaign.
However, APGA has defended the appointment, describing it as recognition of Soludo's leadership and his advocacy for cooperation between the state and the Federal Government. The party's position illustrates that opposition to the arrangement is not universal, even as questions about its political implications continue.
Wike's Role Raises Questions About the PDP
Wike's appointment has also attracted scrutiny because he remains associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while coordinating Tinubu's campaign in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
Critics question what his involvement means for opposition politics and whether the arrangement further complicates the PDP's relationship with its members and supporters.
Wike, however, has argued that the campaign should accommodate people outside the APC who are willing to support Tinubu's re-election.
Adeleke's Appointment Adds to the Debate
In Osun State, Adeleke's inclusion has raised similar questions because he won his governorship mandate under the Accord Party.
While his campaign organisation has welcomed the arrangement, the appointment has generated discussion about political consistency and the relationship between state-level party competition and presidential elections.
What Citizens Want Clarified
The central questions surrounding these appointments concern transparency, party identity and accountability. Nigerians are entitled to ask whether these politicians are acting in personal political capacities, under agreements with their parties, or as representatives of broader political alliances.
Ultimately, the appointments will be judged not only by the positions announced but also by the explanations offered, the reactions within the affected parties and the consequences for political competition ahead of 2027.
