CRISTIANO RONALDO LEAVES PORTUGAL CAMP AMID GROWING TENSIONS
Cristiano Ronaldo has unexpectedly left the Portugal national team’s training camp in Copenhagen, creating fresh uncertainty around his immediate international future.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain departed the squad ahead of the country’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Denmark after developments involving head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo’s exit came shortly after Jesus confirmed that the veteran forward would not start the upcoming match.
Ronaldo announced his decision through social media, explaining that he had spoken with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before leaving the camp. He said he would explain the reasons for his departure at a later time, while wishing Portugal and his teammates success.
The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently confirmed that Ronaldo had left the camp. The federation said preparations for the upcoming fixtures would continue with the remaining players.
WHAT LED TO RONALDO'S DEPARTURE?
The situation developed after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s recent 2–1 Nations League victory over Norway. He warmed up during the match but was not introduced.
Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo had been unhappy about remaining on the bench but said he regarded the matter as resolved. The coach also indicated that Ronaldo would train with the team before the Denmark fixture.
However, Jesus then confirmed that Ronaldo would again not be included in the starting lineup against Denmark. Shortly afterward, Ronaldo left the training environment.
The sequence of events quickly attracted international attention, particularly because of Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal over many years.
RONALDO'S IMPORTANCE TO PORTUGAL
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most-capped player and its leading international goalscorer. His international career has included multiple European Championships, World Cups and other major tournaments.
He has also played a central role in some of the most significant moments in Portuguese football, including the country’s European Championship triumph in 2016 and its Nations League success.
His continued involvement with the national team has therefore remained a major subject of interest, especially after his participation in the 2026 World Cup.
QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS INTERNATIONAL FUTURE
Ronaldo’s departure has inevitably generated questions about whether the incident could affect his relationship with the national team.
However, neither Ronaldo nor the Portuguese federation has announced his retirement from international football. Ronaldo himself indicated that he would explain his reasons for leaving at a later stage.
Reports have also indicated that Jesus and federation president Pedro Proença attempted to persuade Ronaldo to remain with the squad after he left the training camp, although those efforts were unsuccessful.
The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary rules may also become relevant if a player leaves a national-team camp without authorization, although the specific circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure have not been fully disclosed.
PORTUGAL MOVES FORWARD
Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal is continuing preparations for its Nations League fixtures. The remaining squad members are expected to maintain their focus on the matches ahead.
The immediate sporting priority is therefore the Denmark fixture, while attention will remain on any further statement from Ronaldo and developments between the player, the coach and the Portuguese federation.
For now, Ronaldo’s international future remains unresolved. His decision to leave the camp has added another major chapter to an extraordinary international career, but the reasons behind the move—and what it ultimately means for his future with Portugal—are still awaiting a full explanation.
