August 11, 2026 — Colombia: Rescue teams are racing against time after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, leaving more than 250 people dead and causing widespread destruction across several communities.

The earthquake struck early Monday and caused severe damage in parts of the country's coffee-growing region. Pereira and Cali have emerged among the hardest-hit cities, while rural communities have also suffered significant destruction.

According to the latest reports, the death toll has risen above 250 as emergency workers continue searching damaged buildings for people who may still be trapped beneath the rubble. The number is expected to change as rescue teams reach areas where communication remains difficult.

RESCUE OPERATIONS CONTINUE

Emergency crews have deployed cranes, excavators, rescue dogs and other equipment to search collapsed structures. In some locations, rescuers have also been forced to work with their hands because heavy machinery cannot immediately reach affected areas.

The scale of the destruction has created enormous challenges for emergency services. Thousands of homes have reportedly been damaged, while some buildings have completely collapsed.

Hospitals and other essential services have also come under pressure, particularly in heavily affected urban areas. Damaged roads, disrupted utilities and communication difficulties are making it harder for authorities to coordinate the response.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE NEED HELP

The earthquake has affected communities across western Colombia, with some of the worst destruction occurring in areas already facing economic and infrastructure challenges.

Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the disaster. Reports of missing people have also continued to increase as families search for relatives who cannot yet be located.

The situation is particularly difficult in rural areas, where damaged roads and difficult terrain can delay emergency teams from reaching affected communities.

The earthquake was felt across a large portion of Colombia and in neighbouring countries, demonstrating the strength of the seismic event.

GOVERNMENT DECLARES NATIONAL EMERGENCY

Colombia's government has mobilised emergency and security resources to support rescue operations and assist affected communities.

President Abelardo de la Espriella has made the disaster response a national priority as his administration faces one of its first major crises.

Authorities are working to provide emergency assistance, restore essential services and identify people who remain missing.

International assistance has also begun to emerge. The United States has pledged financial support, while the Inter-American Development Bank has offered funding for reconstruction efforts.

A RACE AGAINST TIME

For rescuers, every hour remains critical. People trapped beneath collapsed buildings can survive for extended periods, but the chances of finding survivors generally decline as time passes.

Families across affected communities are waiting for information about relatives and friends, while emergency workers continue searching through damaged buildings.

Officials are also monitoring aftershocks, which can create additional risks for residents and rescue teams working near unstable structures.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The immediate priority is finding survivors, treating the injured and providing shelter and essential supplies to displaced residents.

A full assessment of the economic damage will take considerably longer. Rebuilding homes, roads, hospitals and other infrastructure could require substantial national and international resources.
