WAFCON SHOCKS AS MALAWI, CAMEROON, MOROCCO AND ALGERIA REACH SEMI-FINALS

August 10, 2026 — Africa: The 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has produced a dramatic quarter-final round, with defending champions Nigeria and former champions South Africa eliminated as four teams secured places in the semi-finals.

Malawi, Cameroon, Morocco and Algeria are now the final four teams competing for the continental title. The results have also secured automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil for the four semi-finalists.

CAMEROON ELIMINATES NIGERIA

One of the biggest surprises came when Cameroon defeated defending champions Nigeria 1–0 in their quarter-final.

Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen scored the only goal of the match in the first half, giving Cameroon a narrow victory over one of the tournament's most successful teams.

Nigeria entered the competition as defending champions and had been regarded as one of the leading contenders for another title. However, Cameroon produced a disciplined performance to end the Super Falcons' campaign.

The result means Nigeria will not defend its continental crown, while Cameroon moves into the semi-finals.

MOROCCO KNOCKS OUT SOUTH AFRICA

Hosts Morocco also secured a major victory by defeating South Africa 2–1.

Sakina Ouzraoui opened the scoring before Hanane Ait El Haj doubled Morocco's advantage. South Africa responded through Thembi Kgatlana, but the hosts held on to secure their place in the last four.

The result ended South Africa's hopes of winning another continental title and kept Morocco's campaign alive in front of home supporters.

Morocco's victory also confirmed the hosts' qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup.

MALAWI MAKES HISTORY

Malawi continued its remarkable tournament run by defeating Ghana 2–1 in the quarter-finals.

The Scorchers came from behind after Ghana opened the scoring, with Temwa Chawinga and Rose Kadzere finding the net for Malawi.

The victory is particularly significant because Malawi is making its debut at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. The team has now reached the semi-finals and secured its first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Malawi's progress has become one of the defining stories of the tournament.

ALGERIA COMPLETES THE SEMI-FINAL LINE-UP

Algeria completed the semi-final line-up after coming from behind to defeat Côte d'Ivoire 2–1.

Côte d'Ivoire took the lead through Inès Konan, but Algeria responded strongly in the second half. Inès Khiri equalised before Amira Ould Braham scored the winning goal.

The comeback sent Algeria into the semi-finals and secured the country's place at the 2027 Women's World Cup.

A NEW WAFCON CHAMPION WILL BE CROWNED

With Nigeria and South Africa eliminated, the 2026 WAFCON will produce a new champion.

The remaining teams represent a fascinating mixture of experience and emerging strength. Morocco will have home support behind them, while Cameroon brings its continental pedigree. Algeria and Malawi, meanwhile, have already created historic campaigns by reaching the final four.

The quarter-finals have demonstrated the increasing competitiveness of women's football in Africa.

For Nigeria and South Africa, the tournament has ended earlier than expected. For Malawi, Cameroon, Morocco and Algeria, however, the dream of becoming African champions remains alive.

The semi-finals will now determine which two nations advance to the final and compete for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations title.
