UKRAINE LAUNCHES MASSIVE DRONE ATTACK ON MOSCOW AS RUSSIA STRIKES BACK ACROSS UKRAINE
August 16, 2026
The Russia-Ukraine war intensified on Sunday, August 16, after Ukraine launched one of its largest drone assaults of the war against targets in Russia, while Russian forces carried out a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine. The simultaneous attacks have highlighted the continuing escalation of the conflict despite ongoing international efforts to find a diplomatic solution.
According to Russian officials, hundreds of Ukrainian drones were launched toward Moscow and other parts of Russia overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Russian air defenses intercepted 201 drones over the Moscow region, while Russia's Defence Ministry reported that 822 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across the country. The figures could not be independently verified.
The scale of the assault made it one of the most significant Ukrainian drone operations against the Russian capital since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Russian authorities reported casualties and damage in several locations. An 83-year-old man was killed in Podolsk, while a large Wildberries logistics facility near Moscow was damaged and caught fire. Smoke was seen rising from the warehouse south of the Russian capital.
The attacks reflect Ukraine's growing use of long-range drones to strike infrastructure inside Russia. Ukrainian officials have increasingly targeted facilities they say contribute to Russia's military capabilities or logistics network. The Wildberries facility has previously attracted Ukrainian attention because Kyiv has accused the company of handling goods connected to Russia's military effort, an allegation Moscow disputes.
Russia responded with its own extensive overnight bombardment of Ukraine. Russian missiles and drones struck several Ukrainian cities and regions, including Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih and other locations. Ukrainian authorities reported deaths, injuries and damage to civilian and industrial infrastructure following the attacks. One of the most significant Russian strikes hit the ArcelorMittal steel facility in Kryvyi Rih, a major industrial centre and the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Reports said the attack caused fatalities and injuries while damaging parts of the steel-production complex.
Kyiv was also affected by the Russian bombardment. A missile attack caused fires in parts of the capital, including damage around a book market. The attacks added to concerns about the continuing risks faced by civilians as both sides increasingly rely on drones and long-range missiles to strike targets far from the front line.
The exchange of attacks also had implications beyond Russia and Ukraine. A drone entered Romanian airspace during the wider wave of attacks, prompting a Spanish F-18 NATO aircraft to shoot it down, according to reports. Such incidents demonstrate how the conflict continues to create security risks for neighbouring NATO countries.
Sunday's escalation comes as the war enters another critical phase. Both Moscow and Kyiv continue to demonstrate their ability to conduct attacks deep behind enemy lines, while diplomatic efforts have yet to produce a lasting ceasefire.
The latest strikes therefore represent more than another exchange of missiles and drones. They underline the increasing reach of modern warfare and the continued vulnerability of major cities, industrial facilities and civilian infrastructure. For residents across Russia and Ukraine, the latest escalation serves as another reminder that the conflict remains far from resolved. With casualties continuing to mount and attacks reaching areas previously considered relatively distant from the battlefield, international pressure for a sustainable diplomatic settlement is likely to remain intense.
