FERRY CAPSIZES OFF NORTHERN CYPRUS, LEAVING EIGHT DEAD AND 18 MISSING

A passenger ferry carrying 267 people has capsized and sunk off the coast of Northern Cyprus, leaving at least eight people dead and 18 others missing. A major search-and-rescue operation is continuing as authorities work to locate those still unaccounted for.

The privately operated ferry was travelling from Kyrenia, also known as Girne, toward the Turkish port of Tasucu when the disaster occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026. According to authorities, the vessel began taking on water shortly after leaving port. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.

RESCUE OPERATION UNDERWAY

Rescue teams moved quickly after the ferry capsized. Coast guard vessels, helicopters, military units and other boats were deployed to search the surrounding waters and bring survivors to safety.

Authorities later confirmed that 241 people had been rescued, while eight people had died and 18 remained missing. The vessel eventually sank to a depth of approximately 514 metres, making the search considerably more difficult. Additional rescue resources were sent from Türkiye to support the continuing operation.

Images from the scene showed survivors wearing life jackets and clinging to the overturned ferry before being taken ashore. Medical teams were also placed on alert to receive injured passengers and provide emergency treatment.

SURVIVORS DESCRIBE A CHAOTIC INCIDENT

Some survivors reported that the ferry began behaving erratically before the accident. According to accounts reported by international media, the vessel repeatedly lifted and slammed back onto the water before its bow was damaged and water began entering the ferry.

Authorities have warned against drawing premature conclusions about what caused the disaster. Investigators are expected to examine the vessel, weather conditions, its operating history and the actions of the crew before determining the precise circumstances surrounding the sinking.

CAPTAIN AND CREW DETAINED

The ferry's captain and seven crew members have been detained for questioning as part of the investigation. Their detention does not establish responsibility for the disaster, but authorities are examining their actions and the vessel's condition as part of the official inquiry.

Northern Cyprus has declared three days of national mourning following the tragedy. Turkish authorities have also expressed condolences and committed additional resources to the rescue operation.

The disaster has left families anxiously waiting for news of their relatives. With search efforts continuing, authorities are focusing on finding the missing passengers while investigators work to establish how a routine sea journey turned into a deadly maritime disaster.

The incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of maritime safety, effective emergency procedures and rapid response systems whenever passenger vessels operate at sea.
