OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION: TENSION RISES AS POLITICAL OPPONENTS CLASH AHEAD OF POLL

Osun State is witnessing heightened political tension as residents prepare to vote in the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026. The contest has attracted intense competition among the leading political parties, with the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and ADC candidate Najeem Salaam among the major contenders.

The election comes amid growing concerns about security and political violence. Recent reports indicate that the campaign period has been marked by attacks, accusations and confrontations involving supporters of rival political camps. A security assessment reported 73 election-related violent incidents and 29 deaths ahead of the poll, highlighting the seriousness of the security situation.

Political clashes have also intensified through accusations between opposing camps. The Adeleke administration and the All Progressives Congress have exchanged allegations concerning police interference and attempts to disrupt voting, adding to an already tense atmosphere.

The situation has prompted renewed calls for restraint. President Bola Tinubu has urged INEC and security agencies to ensure that Saturday's election is peaceful, transparent and credible. He also encouraged voters to participate without fear and to conduct themselves responsibly.

Security authorities are taking additional measures ahead of the election. The Nigeria Police Force announced restrictions on movement across Osun from midnight on Friday as security personnel prepare for the poll. The measure is intended to help protect voters, electoral officials and election materials while limiting opportunities for violence and disruption.

The political stakes have risen further following recent endorsements and defections. Two candidates reportedly withdrew from the race and endorsed Adeleke, while other political leaders and parties continue to mobilise support for their preferred candidates. These developments have added another layer of uncertainty to an already closely watched election.

Civil society organisations are also watching developments closely. Yiaga Africa said the Osun election will provide an important test of the preparedness of INEC and security agencies ahead of Nigeria's broader 2027 electoral cycle.

As voters prepare to make their choice, the priority remains the protection of lives and the integrity of the electoral process. Political disagreements are a normal part of democracy, but violence must not become part of the voting process.

The people of Osun now face a crucial responsibility: to vote peacefully, respect opposing views and allow their votes to determine the outcome. The credibility of Saturday's election will depend not only on INEC and security agencies but also on the conduct of political parties, candidates, supporters and voters.
