A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores Island early Saturday, August 15, 2026, killing at least 38 people and causing widespread damage across parts of East Nusa Tenggara. The earthquake triggered a temporary tsunami warning and sent thousands of residents fleeing to safer areas.

EARTHQUAKE CAUSES WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth near Flores, producing intense shaking that was felt across several parts of eastern Indonesia. Buildings and homes were damaged, while landslides blocked roads and made it difficult for emergency teams to reach some communities.

Maumere and surrounding areas were among the locations seriously affected. Several structures collapsed, while damage to roads and other infrastructure complicated rescue operations. Power outages and disrupted communications also created additional challenges for emergency responders.

DEATH TOLL RISES AS RESCUE OPERATIONS CONTINUE

Indonesia’s disaster management authorities reported that at least 38 people had died, while others were injured. Officials warned that the number could change as rescue teams reach areas that remain difficult to access.

Nagekeo, located close to the earthquake’s epicentre, has been particularly challenging for rescuers because landslides blocked roads and communications were disrupted. Emergency teams have been working to reach affected communities and search for people who may still be trapped.

TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED AND LATER LIFTED

The offshore location and shallow depth of the earthquake prompted Indonesian authorities to issue a tsunami warning shortly after the tremor.

Around 2,000 coastal residents evacuated as a precaution while authorities monitored sea levels. The warning was later lifted after officials determined that there was no continuing major tsunami threat. However, tsunami waves were recorded in some coastal locations, underscoring the seriousness of the initial warning.

AFTERSHOCKS ADD TO FEARS

The main earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks, increasing anxiety among residents and complicating rescue and recovery efforts. Authorities have continued monitoring seismic activity while advising people in affected areas to remain alert.

The destruction has also affected transportation and essential services. Landslides have blocked important routes, while damaged buildings and unstable structures remain potential hazards for residents and emergency workers.

The 7.7-magnitude Flores earthquake is therefore still a developing disaster, with Indonesia's emergency agencies focused on rescue, relief and recovery operations across the affected region.
