FRESH PLATEAU ATTACK LEAVES AT LEAST 25 DEAD IN MANGU COMMUNITY

At least 25 people have been killed in a fresh overnight attack on a community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria, according to local officials and residents. The attack occurred between Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, raising renewed concerns about insecurity in the troubled region.

ATTACK TARGETS BINPER COMMUNITY

The incident occurred in Binper, also reported as Bin-Per, in the Mangu area. Residents said armed attackers entered the community during the night and attacked people in their homes.

Local reports have put the death toll at more than 24, with several people injured. The Plateau State House of Assembly separately reported that more than 25 people were killed in Bin-Per, while another person was reportedly killed in attacks on nearby Jwak and Murish communities.

The differing figures reflect the difficulty of establishing an immediate and final casualty count following a major attack. Authorities and local communities may continue to provide updated figures as investigations and recovery operations progress.

HOMES AND FARMLANDS REPORTEDLY DESTROYED

The violence has reportedly caused significant damage beyond the loss of lives. The Plateau State House of Assembly said 38 houses were burnt, while farmlands, barns containing stored food and other property were also destroyed.

Such destruction can have consequences long after an attack ends. Families who lose homes, crops and stored food may face displacement and serious economic hardship, particularly in rural communities where agriculture provides an important source of livelihood.

FEARS OF FURTHER VIOLENCE

The latest incident has renewed fears of retaliatory violence in Plateau State. Reuters reported that the attack has heightened concerns about reprisals in an area where communal tensions involving farming and herding communities have repeatedly contributed to cycles of violence.

Security and community leaders face the difficult task of protecting vulnerable residents while preventing further attacks or retaliation. A rapid investigation, improved security presence and credible identification of those responsible will be important in preventing the situation from escalating.

GOVERNMENT RESPONDS

Plateau State authorities have condemned the violence and called for calm. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has directed security agencies to intensify surveillance and patrols in Mangu and other vulnerable communities, while urging residents to provide useful information to security personnel.
