COPILOT ATTACKS CAPTAIN MID-FLIGHT

A dramatic aviation emergency unfolded on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, when a Flydubai passenger aircraft traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a violent incident involving the pilots.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was operating Flight FZ1073 from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv when the incident occurred in the cockpit. According to Israeli officials and multiple reports, the copilot attacked and stabbed the captain before apparently attempting to take control of the aircraft. The exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities are continuing their investigation.

HOW THE INCIDENT UNFOLDED

The aircraft departed Dubai early Wednesday and climbed to approximately 34,000 feet. Roughly two hours later, flight-tracking data showed a sudden and dramatic descent. The aircraft dropped thousands of feet in a very short period before changing altitude again and making unusual movements near the Saudi Arabia-Jordan border.

The aircraft transmitted an emergency signal, followed by a 7500 code commonly associated with unlawful interference. Israeli authorities became concerned that the situation could represent a hijacking and reportedly scrambled military aircraft as the incident developed.

According to accounts from passengers and Israeli officials, the captain was attacked inside the cockpit and the aircraft subsequently began losing altitude rapidly. Passengers realized something was seriously wrong after hearing disturbances and experiencing the aircraft's sudden movements.

PASSENGERS ENTERED THE COCKPIT

In an extraordinary intervention, passengers and crew members reportedly forced their way into the cockpit and confronted the attacker. Several passengers helped restrain the alleged attacker while other qualified personnel assisted in stabilizing the aircraft.

One passenger later described the situation as chaotic and terrifying, with people believing they could die as the aircraft descended. The intervention allowed the aircraft to regain control and continue toward an emergency landing.

EMERGENCY LANDING IN SAUDI ARABIA

The aircraft eventually diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Saudi authorities arrested the alleged attacker, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The passengers were subsequently transported back to Israel on another Flydubai aircraft.

Reports indicate that there were approximately 170 passengers aboard, with the overwhelming majority reportedly Israeli nationals. The captain and copilot were injured during the incident, while passengers received assistance following the emergency landing.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Flydubai confirmed that an incident occurred in the flight deck and said the aircraft was secured by crew members before being diverted safely to Tabuk. The airline has suspended its flights to Israel while investigations continue.

Israeli authorities have also indicated that additional security measures involving pilots operating flights to Israel may be introduced.

While Israeli officials have described the episode as an attempted attack or hijacking, the full circumstances, motive and sequence of events remain subject to investigation. Authorities in the countries involved are expected to examine the cockpit incident, security procedures and the actions that led to the aircraft's emergency diversion.

The safe landing prevented what could have become a major aviation disaster, while the investigation continues to establish exactly what happened inside the aircraft.
