SOUTH AFRICA REELS AS TWO MASS SHOOTINGS LEAVE 27 DEAD
September 27, 2026
South Africa is facing renewed concern over violent crime after two separate mass shootings near Johannesburg and Cape Town left at least 27 people dead within hours, according to police reports. The attacks occurred on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, prompting a major police operation to locate those responsible.
The first shooting took place in Wedela township, approximately 80 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. Police said 17 people were killed after armed suspects opened fire at a tavern. At least 15 others were injured and taken for medical treatment.
According to authorities, the attackers were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. Police said the gunmen initially opened fire on people outside the tavern before entering the premises and continuing the attack. The suspects reportedly searched some patrons and took their mobile phones before fleeing in vehicles. Two vehicles were later set alight.
Police have launched a manhunt and deployed specialized units as investigators work to establish exactly what led to the attack. One line of investigation reportedly involves possible links to criminal activity surrounding illegal mining in the area, although authorities have not established a confirmed motive.
A second shooting occurred several hours later in Lwandle township near Cape Town. Police said gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue selling grilled meat. Ten people were killed, while 11 others were injured.
Five victims reportedly died at the scene, while another five later died after being taken to medical facilities. Investigators are searching for the perpetrators, but no arrests had been reported in connection with either shooting at the time of the latest police updates.
The two attacks have intensified concerns about gun violence in South Africa, where violent crime has remained a significant public-safety issue. The latest incidents also came only days after another mass shooting near Durban in which at least 11 people were killed at a house party.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the recent violence and called for intensified action against criminal groups. Security agencies are expected to continue investigations in the affected communities while authorities work to identify the suspects and establish the motives behind the attacks.
The incidents have also renewed discussion about illegal firearms, organized crime and the security challenges facing communities in some of South Africa's townships. Police statistics show that the country continues to record thousands of homicides annually, with firearms frequently involved in violent crimes.
For residents of Wedela and Lwandle, however, the immediate concern is the loss of family members, friends and neighbours. Communities are now waiting for answers as investigators work to bring those responsible to justice.
Authorities have urged anyone with useful information about the attacks to cooperate with investigators. Further developments are expected as police continue the manhunt and forensic investigations.
