GEORGE RUSSELL WINS AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX AFTER DRAMATIC BAKU FINISH
By C. C. OKEKE | September 27, 2026
George Russell delivered a commanding performance for Mercedes to win the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, holding off Max Verstappen in a tense finish by just 0.196 seconds. The victory was Russell's third Formula 1 win of the season and came after a race filled with Safety Car interruptions and late pressure.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held on Saturday, September 26, rather than the traditional Sunday schedule because September 27 is Azerbaijan's Remembrance Day. Russell started the race from pole position after producing the fastest qualifying time on Friday.
From the opening lap, the Mercedes driver maintained control of the race. He managed his tyres effectively and built a significant advantage before the first Safety Car period closed the field. The interruption removed much of Russell's lead and gave his rivals an opportunity to challenge for victory.
Max Verstappen emerged as Russell's strongest challenger. The Red Bull driver remained within striking distance during the closing stages and applied considerable pressure after the final Safety Car restart.
Russell nevertheless remained composed and continued to produce strong lap times. He appeared to have the race under control until the final lap, when a yellow flag and a problem affecting his Mercedes temporarily allowed Verstappen to close the gap.
Verstappen gained significant ground approaching the finish, turning what had been a comfortable advantage into a remarkably close battle. Russell ultimately crossed the line just 0.196 seconds ahead to secure the victory.
The result was particularly important for Russell in the championship standings. Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli entered the weekend with an 81-point advantage over Russell. Antonelli started from 16th but recovered strongly to finish fifth, limiting the points Russell gained from the victory. The gap between the two Mercedes drivers was reduced to 66 points.
Isack Hadjar completed the podium for Red Bull, finishing third, while Charles Leclerc brought his Ferrari home in fourth. Antonelli completed the top five after his recovery drive through the field.
The race also proved difficult for McLaren. Oscar Piastri had initially been running near the front but later struggled after a lock-up and finished outside the leading positions. Lando Norris retired following a collision involving Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly.
For Russell, the Baku weekend represented a complete turnaround from a recent period without victories. He had also topped both Friday practice sessions and secured pole position before converting that advantage into a race win.
The victory also demonstrated Mercedes' competitiveness at the Baku City Circuit, one of Formula 1's most demanding street tracks. The circuit combines long high-speed sections with tight corners and narrow passages, creating opportunities for overtaking and late-race changes.
Russell now heads into the next phase of the championship with renewed momentum, while Antonelli retains the lead in the drivers' standings. Red Bull's strong double podium also adds another dimension to the championship battle.
Formula 1 now moves on to Sepang, Malaysia, for the next round, officially scheduled as the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The event will provide another opportunity for the leading teams to test their pace and consistency as the 2026 season continues.
