A boat carrying traders capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday night, leaving at least 12 people dead and dozens of others missing, according to authorities. The incident occurred near Idjwi Island in South Kivu province, where waterways remain an important means of transportation for local communities.

The vessel was reportedly carrying more than 50 people when it overturned in the lake. Félix Habiragi, chief of the village of Kisheke near the accident site, said approximately 15 people had been rescued following the disaster. The number of people still missing remained unclear as rescue efforts continued.

The boat was reportedly transporting fish traders and goods from Bwina on Idjwi Island to Boza. Local administrator Muhindo Ntambuka Pascal confirmed that traders and cargo were aboard the vessel when the accident occurred.

The immediate cause of the capsizing had not been established. Authorities and local officials were expected to continue gathering information as rescue and recovery operations progressed.

Lake Kivu is an important transportation route for communities in eastern Congo, particularly in areas where road transportation can be difficult. Boats provide access between communities and are frequently used by traders transporting fish, agricultural products and other goods.

The latest accident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding water transportation in the country. Local civil society representatives have previously raised concerns about overcrowded vessels and passengers travelling without life jackets.

According to local reports, authorities have introduced requirements for passengers to wear life jackets. However, enforcement remains a challenge, and some passengers continue to travel without adequate safety equipment.

Boat accidents have occurred repeatedly in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where millions of people depend on lakes and rivers for transportation. Overcrowding, inadequate safety equipment and difficult operating conditions have frequently been identified as concerns in previous maritime accidents, although the specific cause of the Lake Kivu incident remains under investigation.

The tragedy is particularly painful for families who are still waiting for information about missing relatives. Some residents have already reported losing friends and family members in the accident, while communities near the lake have participated in rescue and recovery efforts.

Authorities face the difficult task of accounting for everyone who was aboard the vessel while continuing the search for survivors. The number of confirmed deaths could also change as rescue teams recover additional victims and establish a more accurate passenger list.

For the communities around Idjwi Island, the disaster highlights the importance of stronger enforcement of water-transport safety requirements. Ensuring that vessels operate within safe passenger limits and that passengers have access to life jackets could help reduce the risks associated with lake transportation.

As search operations continue, families and residents are waiting for further official information about those who remain missing. The circumstances surrounding the accident are expected to become clearer as authorities complete their assessment of the incident.

The Lake Kivu disaster has once again brought the dangers faced by people who depend on waterways for their daily movement and livelihoods into sharp focus.
