MYANMAR AIRSTRIKE ON RAKHINE MARKET LEAVES DOZENS DEAD AND INJURED

DEADLY AIRSTRIKE HITS KYAUktaw

A deadly airstrike in western Myanmar has left dozens of people dead and many others injured after bombs struck a market and nearby bridge in Kyauktaw, a town in Rakhine State. The attack occurred on Monday, September 28, 2026, amid the continuing conflict between Myanmar’s military and the Arakan Army.

Initial reports placed the death toll at 33, with 36 people injured. By Tuesday, however, the reported number of fatalities had risen to around 50 as rescuers recovered additional bodies from the scene. Reuters reported that a local aid worker and the armed group controlling the area confirmed the updated toll.

MARKET WAS CROWDED WHEN THE STRIKE OCCURRED

The attack reportedly happened around midday when the area was busy with vendors, shoppers and pedestrians. The market is considered an important wholesale trading centre for the region, attracting people from surrounding communities.

According to reports from the area, the strike damaged the market and the nearby Kissapanadi Bridge. Photographs and video footage published by international news organizations showed smoke, damaged structures, burning debris and vehicles affected by the attack.

The location is in territory controlled by the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed organization that has been fighting Myanmar's military for control of Rakhine State.

CASUALTIES CONTINUE TO RISE

The number of casualties has changed as rescue teams have continued searching the affected area. Early reports said at least 33 people had been killed and 36 injured. Later reports from local aid workers indicated that the death toll had reached approximately 50.

Some of the injured were reportedly in critical condition, meaning the final number of fatalities could change further. The differing casualty figures also reflect the difficulty of obtaining independently verified information from an active conflict zone.

Reuters noted that the initial details could not be independently verified and that Myanmar's military had not immediately responded to requests for comment.

MYANMAR'S CONTINUING CONFLICT

Myanmar has remained engulfed in armed conflict since the military seized power in February 2021. The takeover triggered widespread resistance and contributed to the expansion of fighting involving pro-democracy forces and numerous ethnic armed organizations.

The Arakan Army has expanded its territorial control in Rakhine State during the conflict. Fighting between the group and the military has intensified in recent years, contributing to displacement, disruption of trade and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Rakhine is also strategically important because it borders Bangladesh and contains major transportation and commercial routes.

HUMANITARIAN CONCERNS GROW

The latest attack has renewed concerns about the safety of civilians living in conflict-affected communities. Markets, transportation routes and other civilian areas are particularly important to local populations because they provide access to food, employment and essential goods.

Humanitarian conditions in Rakhine have already been severely affected by fighting and restrictions on movement and trade. Continued violence could make it increasingly difficult for residents to obtain food, medical assistance and other basic necessities.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The immediate priority is expected to remain the treatment of the wounded, recovery of victims and assistance to affected families. The latest incident also highlights the continuing danger faced by civilians as fighting persists across Myanmar.

With casualty figures still developing and conflicting accounts surrounding the incident, further information from local authorities, humanitarian organizations and independent international news organizations will be important for establishing the full circumstances of the attack.

The Kyauktaw airstrike is therefore another significant development in Myanmar's prolonged conflict, with its consequences extending beyond the immediate destruction to the broader humanitarian situation in Rakhine State.
