Shettima to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation to 81st UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mandated him to represent Nigeria at the high-level international gathering.

The development was announced on Sunday, September 20, 2026, by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.

Shettima will lead a high-level delegation that includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.

The 81st United Nations General Assembly General Debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 28, 2026. This year’s session is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

During the General Debate, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement, presenting the country’s position and priorities on major international issues that have implications for national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.

His participation will also extend beyond the General Debate. According to the Presidency, the Vice President is expected to take part in high-level meetings focusing on the Right to Development, climate action and other matters considered important to Nigeria and the wider African continent.

Shettima is also expected to participate in the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and hold bilateral meetings with foreign leaders, international organisations and development partners during the UNGA week.

The Nigerian delegation’s engagements are expected to provide an opportunity for the country to strengthen diplomatic relationships and discuss areas of mutual interest with international partners.

The Presidency said the meetings will also support Nigeria’s economic diplomacy and efforts to deepen strategic partnerships. Other areas expected to receive attention include reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation.

The Vice President has previously represented President Tinubu at the United Nations General Assembly, including the 79th and 80th sessions in 2024 and 2025.

The latest assignment places Shettima at the centre of Nigeria’s representation during another important gathering of world leaders. His planned meetings and national address will provide an international platform for the Federal Government to present Nigeria’s priorities and engage with other countries on issues affecting the nation, Africa and the wider international community.

Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his official engagements in New York.
